User experience—or UX in technical lingo—describes all the aspects of a program (in this case, a mobile app) that affect the impression made on the end user. All design elements play a part in UX, and depending on how they're implemented, can have a positive or negative influence on the overall app. Make it look too busy or confusing—and therefore hard to use—and you're gonna turn people off. You've got to juggle several different considerations when it comes to app design. It should be attention-getting, informative, and easy to use. That's a lot to keep in mind, and a single misstep can make a huge difference in your app's ultimate success.

We've set up this thread for our Appvice Community members to discuss the intricate details that go into effective app design. All perspectives are welcome here, whether you're an app developer, designer, or end user. What characteristics make a visual element attractive or ugly? Have you come across an app with a strong “wow factor,” and if so, what about its design took your breath away? Share your thoughts and suggestions on app design—and how it shapes the user experience—with your fellow members here.
